PSP Audioware recently updated their venerable and affordable compressor plug-in – oldTimer. It is now called oldTimerME – or mastering edition…I believe.
What once as one plug-in is now two. The cool thing is PSP made the update free to all registered users, which I’m one. They also dropped the price a little to $79 as an introductory offer until May 31, 2011.
I really applaud companies like PSP Audioware that offer free updates like this, because they really don’t have to – many other plug-in makers don’t.
Not too mention, PSP’s prices are more than fair for their products. I currently own five of their plug-ins.
Another cool thing about PSP is their discount policy. The more PSP plugs you own the deeper the discount you get on future plug-in purchases.
oldTimer’s Update
PSP listened to their customers and added extended features to their already popular compressor plug-in. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve heard hardly any negative things about this plug-in.
They’ve added Attack and Release controls as well as Dry/Wet knobs and the ability to process Left, Right, Mid or Side channels exclusively.
Even with these new “more complicated” features, oldTimer is still relatively easy to set up and use.
PSP’s oldTimer gets quite a bit of use in my mixes. I use it on everything from vocals, acoustic guitars, percussion, drums, drum loops, electric guitars and busses.
Now, with the added features, I’m starting to use it for some light compression on my stereo bus to “glue things together” a little. It’s a very versatile compressor.
Amongst Other Compressor Plugs…
To be honest, I don’t have a ton of plug-ins other than the ones that came with Apple Logic.
Might their be other compressor plug-ins that I like better? Sure, but in this price range, there aren’t many other plug-in compressors that I like more than the oldTimer…err, I mean the oldTimerME.
I’ve read some comments saying that this was a must have plug-in. While I really like the oldTimer – personally, I don’t think there’s too many plug-ins out there that are “must have”.
Though, if someone asks for a low cost compressor plug-in recommendation, I would not hesitate to recommend this one.
Overall, I think this is a great little plug-in at a great price – even at it’s full price of $99. If you’re in the market and interested give it a test drive.
It’s available for Mac and PC and for all major plug-in formats – VST, RTAS, Audio Units. It is also 32 or 64bit.
